Scuffing Marring & Black Heel Marks:

CAUSES

FOOT TRAFFIC:  All sealed flooring is subject to abrasion caused by foot traffic and there is no such thing as a "maintenance free floor."  Poorly maintained or unprotected sealer will soon become heavily worn and distressed, resulting in expensive repair.

REMEDIES & PREVENTION

Scuffmarks appear as dull marks on the surface of the sealer or polish.  They are usually caused by abrasion, such as foot traffic.  These are usually superficial and can be easily repaired by cleaning the area with a mild solution of 2 to 4 ounces of RoVal Tile & Stone Cleaner mixed with 1 gallon of clean water.  Allow the area to dry and "feather" RoVal Reflecta Polish over the area where the scuffmarks appear.  This will cosmetically "hide" the scuffs while providing protection to the floor.  Allow the polish to completely dry before additional coats are applied.

Black heel marks are actually rubber burns from the black heel of a shoe.  Sometimes this can be very damaging to sealed flooring.  Black heel marks can usually be removed without permanently damaging the finish.  Rub the black heel marks off the surface with a damp, soft terry cloth type rag and a mild solvent, such as mineral spirits or rubbing alcohol.  Use the solvent sparingly so as not to damage the finish.  Once the marks are successfully removed, clean the area with a mild solution of cleaner and allow the area to thoroughly dry.

Scratches are usually caused by a sharp instrument (e.g. dog nails, spike heels, furniture, etc.) that actually slice into the finish.  These can damage the floor depending upon the nature and depth of the scratch.  Remember that metal can scratch!  Scratches can usually be repaired simply by applying two coats of Reflecta Polish to the scratch.  For scratches that have gone through the actual tile surface, the removal of the sealer, sanding the scratch and resealing of the tile may be necessary.  Contact your RoVal representative for the best procedure.
